This 3-hour CEU workshop introduces clinicians to matrescence—the profound psychological, emotional, hormonal, and social transition that occurs when a person becomes a mother. Despite being one of the most significant developmental processes in adult life, matrescence remains largely absent from clinical training and discourse. This workshop aims to fill that gap by framing matrescence as a developmental stage, rather than solely a medical or pathological condition, thereby expanding clinicians’ capacity to support clients in the perinatal and early parenting periods. Participants will learn how to differentiate normative challenges of matrescence from perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, and how to support clients in navigating both the distress and the growth that accompany this life stage. Through lecture, discussion, case examples, and reflective exercises, participants will leave with greater theoretical understanding as well as practical tools to help clients make meaning of their transition to motherhood, strengthen resilience, and foster well-being.
